Lobbying Case Studies

Analyzing Political Issues and Trends

Quick and accurate information is critical to our clients. We are proactive in tracking federal activity for upcoming legislation and policy changes that could potentially affect our clients. We garner in-depth information and analyze the implications of a policy shift on our client’s bottom line. We relay our counsel quickly and concisely.

Developing and Advocating Policy

Federal policy can make or break an industry. We represent a leading national insurance company that is directly influenced by the regulatory landscape of their industry. To help our client navigate this web, we have directed them to the source, facilitating meetings with Members of Congress and the Agencies. We have positioned our client as the voice of the industry, offering them as a trusted source of industry input and information to government leaders. This high-level consultation has resulted in several major legislative victories for the industry, our client, and the consumer. We have helped our client form assistance programs for the poor, establish investment vehicles and create flexibility in public funding for health care.

Developing and Implementing Policy Strategy

One of our clients, a large international energy and electronics company, created an innovative technology capable of greatly increasing electricity efficiency. Our client hoped to see their technology integrated into the national electric power infrastructure, where it could facilitate competition and reduce consumer costs. Working closely with our client, we developed and implemented a multifaceted approach: establishing name recognition for the company and its technology on Capitol Hill and among federal agencies, generating support and enthusiasm for the technology, and cooperating and coordinating with government affiliated energy organizations. Our efforts netted a ground swell of support for our client’s technology and we were able to include a provision in key energy legislation encouraging utilities nationwide to use our client’s technology.

Educating Congress and the Executive Branch

In today’s state of heightened security and awareness, government is increasingly looking to the private sector for solutions to its homeland security concerns. One of our clients, a large data collection company, believed their services could be of use to the government. They asked us to help them educate government leaders about their e-security initiatives, including their ability to create terrorist tracking databases and to provide in-depth information for identity verification and authentication. We connected our client to officials at the heart of policy decisions and helped them communicate their homeland security capabilities. As a direct result of our efforts, our client has been awarded several government contracts to engage in data collection and participate in homeland security efforts.

Identifying and Building Government Funding

JCG represents a small company that develops cutting-edge cargo inspection and explosive detection technologies. These state-of-the art technologies are capable of meeting federally mandated security standards for airports, border crossings, and seaports. Recently, Congress considered various appropriations programs for security technologies and our client asked us to help them be included in that funding. Through Congressional hearings, witness testimony, and meetings with key Congressional Members, we positioned our client’s technologies as capable and reliable tools for homeland security. Based on the effectiveness of our strategy, we obtained initial funding to test the equipment at a border entry station and an airport and secured $30 million for further development and deployment. Our client’s product will soon be an integral part of our nation’s security infrastructure.

International Representation

Our work is not limited to domestic advocacy. We have developed a significant international network of clients and contacts. We represent a group that has deep ties and interests in Central Asia. Our charge was to forge relationships worldwide to influence Federal and international policy in that turbulent region. Through our extensive network, our client was able to voice their on-the-ground knowledge with key officials at the CIA, FBI, State Department, and Capitol Hill. We also connected them to senior decision makers within foreign governments. These interactions led to a pointed change in attitude by the domestic and world policy makers towards our client’s point of view.

Managing a Policy Crisis

When a sudden change in U.S. trade policy threatened the livelihood of our client, a prominent commodities-based manufacturing firm, JCG was there to rectify the situation. Swift and succinct action was needed. In the course of our legislative research, we pinpointed a small portion of the policy as our point of attack. By meeting with high-level officials on Capitol Hill and in the Administration, we were able explain the client’s extenuating circumstances and, eventually, a small change in the law’s wording was incorporated. Although this modification was slight, it ensured the continued profitability and success of our client.

Representing Clients Before State Governments

We strive to adapt our lobbying expertise to the needs of our clients. We demonstrated this ideal with a prominent public sector consulting firm client. While representing and guiding their effort at the federal level, we also identified a strategy to expand their services at the state level. Our staff worked hard to open doors with a number of states. We also identified a number of additional business strategies that helped the client expand their service offerings, beat the competition and increase their profit. We informed key policy makers, offering specific examples of how our client could better serve their state. In the course of a year, our client doubled the state’s revenue. The diverse capabilities of our organization and the dedication of our staff allow us to provide successful representation at all levels of government.
